Lyme borreliosis is an infectious disease caused by the Ixodes tick-transmitted spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. Yale Rheumatology has been at the forefront of Lyme disease research since the identification and elucidation of Lyme arthritis by our section in the early 1970’s. Lyme disease has emerged as the most common vector-borne disease in North America and is a significant health care concern, with recent CDC estimates of the annual case incidence approaching ~300,000.
